Amazon Prime Video transports SDCC crowd into the world of The Boys, Carnival Row and The Expanse

Amazon Prime Video went all out this year during San Diego Comic-Con 2019 to promote its new shows like The Boys, Carnival Row, and The Expanse. Guests visiting the biggest pop culture event of the year were treated to immersive experiences, panels, and parties. Nerd Reactor was invited to check out the different activities, and they were loads of fun.

The Boys is coming to Amazon this week on July 26th, and it had a big presence during San Diego Comic-Con. People walking on Fifth Ave could see a giant ad plastered on the buildings, and those who entered the Amazon Prime Video activations had the chance to help out The Boys cover up the scene of a crime.

Taken straight out of a scene from The Boys, guests had to uncover what happened inside an audio and video store. A car has crashed through the building, and the shelves are destroyed. It turns out that Butcher and Hughie, the main characters of the show, were involved with incapacitating Translucent, a superhero who can turn invisible. It’s up to guests to find the evidence and destroy them. One included a VHS tape that contained surveillance footage. Our very own Laura Sirikul smashed the tape by throwing it onto the ground. I made extra sure it was destroyed by stomping on it. One guest was recording the whole interaction, and the actor went up to him and accused him of working with the supers. The conversation escalated quickly, resulting in the guest getting stabbed and bleeding to death. Don’t worry, he was a plant who actually waited in line with us. It was a shocking turn of events, but it helped with immersing us into the world of The Boys.

Fans who attended The Boys party on Friday, July 19th, had the pleasure of watching the first two episodes of the show while also having the chance to partake in some delicious food and alcoholic beverage. Before the show started, they were greeted by the cast and crew including Karl Urban and Jack Quaid.

Carnival Row

Carnival Row is a series coming to Amazon in late August, and it made a big splash during SDCC. Stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne made appearances all over including ConanCon at the Spreckels Theatre. The Carnival Row activation inside the Amazon Prime Video Experience is considered one of our favorite activities at SDCC.

Carnival Row is set in a Victorian fantasy world where fairy tale creatures immigrate to the human world. To capture the tension between them, the experience splits up the guests into two different categories: humans and creatures. Before entering the marketplace, humans and creatures were separated into two lines. The humans were treated with respect while the creatures were treated like trash. As a human, it was nice to have special treatment. After passing through the guard, we took in the sights of the marketplace where creatures were selling all kinds of items.

The main and final area is located inside a speakeasy with sexy fairies dancing and a female creature singing on the stage. Some guests were taken into private areas where they got to experience different activities. However, the festivities were cut short when the officials came barging in. All the patrons at the establishment, including us, were kicked out.

On July 20, Saturday night, Amazon Prime Video turned the whole Experience area into the Carnival Row: Come As You Are Party. Opened to the public, the event had food and open bar for hungry and thirsty partygoers. Mythological creatures can be seen entertaining the crowd including a special show featuring fairies doing martial arts on the multi-level tower.

Last year, Amazon had a huge obstacle course set in the world of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. It featured zip-lining, repelling off a life-size helicopter, and shooting bad guys in a VR world. Amazon Prime Video knows how to create an immersive world, and I for one hope Amazon continues creating these elaborate experiences in the future at San Diego Comic-Con.
