Game of Thrones series finale hits all-time HBO record

Last night, the Game of Thrones series finale was watched by a record 19.3 million viewers across HBO’s platforms, exceeding the previous series high of 18.4 million viewers from last week.

In addition, the episode scored the most-watched single telecast record on HBO ever, with 13.6 million viewers for the 9:00 p.m. airing. The previous high (13.4 million) was held by The Sopranos Season 4 premiere (9/15/02). Season 8 of Game of Thrones is averaging 44.2 million viewers per episode in gross audience, an increase of more than 10 million viewers when compared to Season 7.

Based on the popular book series A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R.R. Martin, the Emmy-winning fantasy series chronicles an epic struggle for power in a vast and violent kingdom. The series stars Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams.

Executive producers of Game of Thrones Season 8 are David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger, and Bernadette Caulfield; co-executive producers are Martin, Guymon Casady, Vince Gerardis and Bryan Cogman; and producers are Chris Newman, Greg Spence, and Lisa McAtackney.

The final season of Game of Thrones likely won’t be our last trip to Westeros, as HBO has greenlit a pilot set 1,000 years before the events of the wildly popular sword and sorcery epic. Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse have been cast in the as-yet-untitled prequel series. S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders, Jessica Jones) will direct the pilot.
