Jessica Chastain has been vocal about female empowerment, and it’s fitting to see her act opposite of Sophie Turner, who has played Sansa Stark, a woman living in a medieval fantasy world who was able to come out on top. Together, they can be seen in the upcoming Dark Phoenix film from Fox, and in that film, Sophie’s Jean Grey will become even more powerful than before thanks to the power of the Phoenix. Audiences saw the might of the mutant hero when she was crucial in defeating Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse. During an interview, the two actresses talked about how it should be normal to see strong female characters.
“Growing up, I didn’t really feel like…I’d seen a superhero movie with a really strong female at the helm,” Turner told E! News. “Now, it’s so great that young girls and young boys and your daughter can grow up and watch this movie and look at it and say, ‘Oh wow, what a strong, well-rounded, accurate representation of a woman.'”
“Also, all women are strong and all women are incredible and powerful,” Chastain said. “It’ll be nice, when we get to the point too when we make these films, that we don’t have to say, ‘It’s great to see a strong female character, well, it’s just normal.'”
“Yeah,” Turner agreed. “It’s just a character.”
Dark Phoenix synopsis: This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.
The film is written and directed by Simon Kinberg and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.
Dark Phoenix hits theaters on June 7, 2019.
