Shazam! is estimated to make $40 million during opening weekend

Shazam Zachary Levi

Marvel Studios and its marketing have been great with its superhero films, especially with Captain Marvel grossing $550 million at the worldwide box office in just 7 days. It made $153 million during its domestic opening. All eyes will be on Shazam! next since it is the next big superhero film to come out. With the film receiving praises from critics, will that be enough to help push the DC film to over $100 million during its opening? That may not be the case according to early trackings of around $40 million.

Comparing it to Captain Marvel isn’t a fair one since the Marvel Studios film has an estimated budget of $150 million. It’s also a highly anticipated film that was a bridge between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame despite the controversy surrounding Brie Larson’s comments. Additionally, the Marvel brand is very strong where it can even have the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy becoming a huge blockbuster. As for Shazam!, it has a smaller budget of $80 million, with the hero being a relatively unknown character among the general moviegoing audience.

Synopsis: In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard (Djimon Hounsou). Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).

The film is directed by David F. Sandberg, who is known for directing horror films like Anabelle: Creation and Lights Out. Henry Gayden worked on the screenplay from a story by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke and based on the DC character created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck. Joining Zachary Levi are Mark Strong, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Djimon Hounsou, Faithe Herman, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Marta Milans, and Cooper Andrews.

Shazam! flies into theaters on April 5. Warner Bros. is pretty confident that the audience reaction will be positive since it has teamed up with Fandango for early paid screenings on March 23, two weeks before the wide release.

As for other films, Dumbo is estimated to make between $58 million to $75 million when it opens on March 28th. The Pet Sematary remake is looking to make between $21 million and $28 million, the same weekend as Shazam!
