Netflix has released the trailer for its upcoming superhero team series, The Umbrella Academy, based on the comic from My Chemical Romance lead vocalist Gerard Way and artist Gabriel Bá. Not only is Way the co-creator of Umbrella Academy, but he also performs the cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “A Hazy Shade of Winter” in the trailer. He is a man of many talents.
The trailer gives us a little bit of background on Umbrella Academy. In October 1989, there were 43 women all over the world who instantly gave birth to kids. They showed no signs of pregnancy before, and the remaining surviving babies were adopted by a billionaire and entrepreneur. The kids have superpowers, only to grow up and part ways. 17 years later, they have returned to mourn the passing of their foster father. Well, some of them. Now that the children are together, they must learn to work together to fight an unknown threat.
The show is developed by Steve Blackman. It stars Ellen Page (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as Vanya Hargreeves, Tom Hopper (Game of Thrones, Black Sails) as Luther Hargreeves, Robert Sheehan (Misfits, Mortal Engines) as Klaus Hargreeves, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison Hargreeves, David Castañeda (Sicario: Day of the Soldado) as Diego Hargreeves, Aidan Gallagher (Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn) as Number Five, Mary J. Blige as Cha-Cha, Cameron Britton as Hazel, Colm Feore as Sir Reginald Hargreeves, Adam Godley as Pogo, and John Magaro as Leonard Peabody.
As The Umbrella Academy, Vanya has no powers but she is very proficient in the violin, Hopper has super strength, Klaus is the troublemaker with telekinetic powers and the ability to talk to the dead, Allison has the ability to warp reality through lying, Diego is gifted with throwing knives and can really hold his breath, and Number Five can time travel.
The Umbrella Academy premieres on Netflix on February 15, 2019.
