Netflix has been on a roll lately with reviving classic Japanese properties into new and original series. It turned a Japanese video game series into an animated one with Castlevania, and it made recent news with plans of producing a live-action Cowboy Bebop series. Today Netflix has announced that it will be making a whole new 3DCG Ghost in the Shell series called Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 with Kenji Kamiyama, Production IG, Shinji Aramaki, and SOLA Digital Arts.
Ghost in the Shell is based on the manga by Masamune Shirow, who was also responsible for Appleseed.
Aramaki is no stranger to Shirow’s work since he has directed the Appleseed CG-animated films. Additionally, he’s also working on the new Blade Runner: Black Lotus anime series for Crunchyroll and Adult Swim.
Kamiyama has directed the previous Ghost in the Shell anime series including Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG.
With both directors teaming up, we think the upcoming Netflix 3DCG series is going to be in good hands.
Kamiyama and Aramaki are both working on Ultraman for Netflix, which will be released on April 1, 2019.
Ghost in the Shell is co-directed by Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki with Production IG and SOLA Digital Arts being the production studios.
The Ghost in the Shell movies and series are set in the future and follow Major Motoko Kusanagi as she fights cyber terrorism. As a human inside a robotic body, she becomes a deadly soldier for an organization called Section 9. She is usually joined by Batou, a member with cybernetic parts, and Togusa, a member of Section 9 who hasn’t received cybernetic enhancements.
A live-action film was directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman ) and starred Scarlett Johansson as the Major.
