With news of Netflix’s Marvel TV shows like Luke Cage and Iron Fist being canceled, there were those who felt like Daredevil wouldn’t be touched. Daredevil is the most popular of the bunch and it started the whole Netflix/Marvel shows. Well, looks like Daredevil fans are going to be disappointed with news of Daredevil being canceled on Netflix.
At first, it seemed like Netflix was canceling Iron Fist and Luke Cage due to low ratings. With Daredevil getting the ax, it opens up a whole other can of worms. Is Netflix not happy with the performance of the shows, or do Disney and Marvel have other plans? Perhaps the shows will continue on in the upcoming Disney streaming service, Disney+. But would the service allow for M-rated content? Will it tone the violence and sex down to cater to its subscribers?
The first season of Daredevil still ranks as the top season in the Netflix/Marvel shows for many fans. Netflix and Marvel TV were able to bring in Drew Goddard to help with the story with Steven S. DeKnight as the showrunner. Daredevil Season 3 came out in October, and it was praised by fans and critics, with some fans ranking the third season right below the first season. Showrunner Erik Oleson even tweeted about how he pitched to Netflix his idea for the fourth season.
Just pitched @netflix #Daredevil Season 4. Fingers crossed!

Looks like Erik will really have to cross his fingers harder.
Here’s the statement released from Netflix, courtesy of Deadline:
“Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix. We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note. We’re thankful to showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years. While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”
The next day, Marvel said in a statement, “We look forward to more adventures with the Man without Fear in the future.”
Yes, that’s very vague. Disney+ is set to launch in 2019, but a gritty show like Daredevil probably wouldn’t be a right fit for the Disney streaming service. Perhaps it’ll be immortalized on a different streaming service like Hulu. For now, we do know that Disney+ is planning a show featuring Tom Hiddleston as Loki, with Kevin Feige behind the wheels instead of Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb.
Jessica Jones and The Punisher are still in the mix, but with this trend, we may hear reports of those getting canceled as well. Jessica Jones Season 3 already started principal photography this summer with The Punisher Season 2 filming already finished in August. Netflix will air the new seasons in 2019.
Do you think Disney+ will host future seasons of Daredevil? Do you think the streaming service will have the guts to keep the dark tone? Let us know via our socials!
