Alien: Awakening details revealed for Ridley Scott’s scuttled sequel

With the disappointing box office of Alien: Covenant as well as the sale of 20th Century Fox to Disney, it seems the prospect of third Alien prequel from director Ridley Scott are dim. Knowing that, Empire (via HN Entertainment) has unearthed a plot synopses of the script Alien: Awakening by John Logan (Spectre, Alien: Covenant) that was originally written with the intention of being Scott’s next picture after All the Money in the World.

“Logan’s script would have seen the return of Prometheus’ Engineers, with that species’ survivors coming after the genocidal David,” according to Empire. “Setting-wise, Scott said it was obvious ‘We’re gonna actually go to the planet’. by which we assume he means LV-426.”

This might have also, as Scott had suggested in the past, led to a bridging with the original Alien and the crew of the Nostromo discovering the derelict ship and its eggy contents in the aftermath of this final battle between Engineers and David (Michael Fassbender).

“We are [going to make another], we are,” Scott previously told Entertainment Weekly in December of last year. “I think what we have to do is gradually drift away from the alien stuff. People say, ‘You need more alien, you need more face pulling, need more chest bursting,’ so I put a lot of that in ‘Covenant’ and it fitted nicely. But I think if you go again you need to start finding another solution that’s more interesting. I think AI is becoming much more dangerous and therefore more interesting.”

As it stands, rumors of a potential TV series based on the Alien franchise might signal a change in the nearly 40-year-old property. It’s also possible that R-rated series like Alien or Predator may not have a place in the new Disney-led Fox, especially after recent entries have disappointed. Ridley Scott returned to the universe he created with Alien: Covenant, the latest chapter in his groundbreaking Alien franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

Alien: Covenant stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, Benjamin Rigby, and James Franco.

John Logan (Spectre) and Dante Harper provided the Alien: Covenant screenplay. Alien: Covenant brought in over $240 million at the global box office, a disappointing sum compared to the $400 million generated by Prometheus.
