Reports are coming in that James Gunn is set to write and possibly direct Suicide Squad 2, according to sites like The Wrap and Deadline. This comes after news of Gunn being fired from directing Guardians of the Galaxy 3 by Disney.
It all started when Gunn made supporters of Trump very angry with his tweets, and this resulted in them digging up his old tweets featuring offensive jokes about pedophilia and rape. Of course, Walt Disney Studios is all about family entertainment, and making jokes like these is a big no-no. Fans of Gunn will be glad that Warner Bros. isn’t too concerned about Gunn’s past. And since the studio isn’t focused primarily on family entertainment, bringing Gunn on board with the sequel to Suicide Squad is a no-brainer.
The first Suicide Squad film features a bunch of misfits teaming up together to save the world. This definitely reminds us of Guardians of the Galaxy, which also features a bunch of misfits working together to save people. Music is also a highlight for the Guardians of the Galaxy films, and we can see that Suicide Squad has been inspired by that with its own use of popular music being placed in the film. So perhaps Gunn is the best choice after all.
Since Gunn’s firing, Disney received flak from Gunn supporters. Many urged Disney to reconsider, and even the Guardians of the Galaxy cast pleaded with Disney to bring Gunn back. However, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that he stands by the decision from the studio executives.
Director Gavin O’Connor was previously set to direct the Suicide Squad sequel, but it looks like that’s not happening. What’s the reason? Could it be creative differences?
Suicide Squad 2 is still some time away, but fans wanting a piece of Joker action can check out another film coming sooner. Warner Bros. is currently filming a standalone Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix.
