Alright, Disney fans, it’s the moment many of us have been waiting for. Walt Disney Studios has just released the teaser trailer for its upcoming live-action Aladdin film, and it’s going to take us into a whole new yet familiar world. The trailer starts up with a grand shot of the desert, and the music in the background is an epic version of Arabian Nights.
The teaser trailer follows a bird (Iago, anyone?) as it flies across the deserts of Agrabah and towards the Cave of Wonders, with the recognizable feline head and intimidating voice. “Only one may enter here,” says the Cave of Wonders. “One whose worth lies far within. A diamond in the rough.” It sounds just like Frank Welker’s original voice in the animated film. Let’s hope they brought him back.
Aladdin stars Will Smith as Genie, Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, Navid Negahban as Sultan, and Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders. Who the hell is Prince Anders? Disney has stated that he’s “a suitor from Skanland and potential husband for Princess Jasmine.”
The film is directed by Guy Ritchie, who brought us British gangster films like Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Let’s hope he has the talent to deliver a faithful yet fresh version of a beloved animated classic. Composer Alan Menken returns for old and new songs. With the teaser crediting lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, for sure fans will be treated with classic songs like “Friend Like Me” and “A Whole New World.” If not, there will be riots.
Robin Williams’s performance as the Genie was memorable and emotional, so let’s hope Smith will be up for the task.
