In a new interview, Golden Globe winner Idris Elba (The Wire, Avengers: Infinity War) has called it a privileged for him to be able to have a big significant part in the reinvention of the classic tale The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

“The film at the moment lives entirely in my brain,” Elba told Empire.“I’m very fortunate to have a classic tale to reinvent. So now it’s about how I execute it.

Elba added that the Netflix film might be the hardest project he has ever work on so far but he is still very ready to take on the challenge, saying:“I’m definitely taking on more than I’ve ever taken on in any other project.”

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is being written by Michael Mitnick (The Current War, The Giver), adapting Victor Hugo’s classic French Romantic/gothic novel of that was published in 1831. The original story takes place in 1482 and follows Quasimodo, a hunchback who falls in love with the gypsy Esmeralda.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame film will be Elba’s second directorial film project and he is also set to star in the film. On top of that, Elba will be producing the film under his Green Door production banner and has also agreed to produce the original music for the feature, which is being described as a “sonic and musical experience.” Fred Berger (La La Land) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Midnight Special) will produce for Automatik, along with Green Door’s Ana Garanito.

Elba made his directorial debut this year with the Sundance drama Yardie. He also created the comedy Turn Up Charlie that was ordered straight-to-series by Netflix, where he will also star and executive produce.
