Avengers: Infinity War debuts in China with $200M, global total at $1.6B

Marvel Studios‘ Avengers: Infinity War again dominated the global box office with a $349 million weekend, including an estimated $200 million from China, making it the second-biggest industry three-day opening ever there. Domestically, Infinity War added $61.8 million for a total of $547.8 million after three weeks, while internationally the film added $281.3 million for a total of $1.059 billion. That takes the global total to $1.607 billion, puts the film at No. 5 on the all-time global list, and makes it the highest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe release ever, surpassing Marvel’s The Avengers‘ $1.519 billion!

The international highlights so far are as follows: China ($200M); Korea ($84.6M); UK ($82.1M); Brazil ($55.6M); Mexico ($54.8M); India ($41.0M); Australia ($40.7M); France ($39.8M); Germany ($36.1M); Russia ($28.6M); Japan ($27.8M); Indonesia ($24.4M); Philippines ($21.8M); Spain ($21.3M); Italy ($21.0M); Taiwan ($19.3M); Hong Kong ($18.6M); Thailand ($17.2M); and Malaysia ($16.6M).

The Anthony and Joe Russo-directed film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Peter Dinklage, Benedict Wong, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow, Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, and Chris Pratt.

New Line Cinema comedy Life of the Party opened in second place domestically with an estimated $18.5 million from 3,656 theaters, an average of $5,060 per site. Opening in eight overseas markets this weekend, Life of the Party grossed an estimated $2.9 million on about 1,200 screens. The film, which received a B CinemaScore, was directed by Ben Falcone and stars Melissa McCarthy, Gillian Jacobs, Maya Rudolph, Julie Bowen, Matt Walsh, Molly Gordon, Stephen Root, and Jacki Weaver.

Debuting in third place was Universal Pictures thriller Breaking In, with $16.5 million from 2,537 theaters, an average of $6,504. Breaking In also opened in five international markets this weekend, grossing $1 million. Directed by James McTeigue, the film received a B CinemaScore and stars Gabrielle Union, Billy Burke, Richard Cabral, Seth Carr, and Ajiona Alexus. Breaking In cost just $6 million to make.

Dropping two spots to fourth place but just 31% in ticket sales was MGM and Lionsgate/Pantelion Films’ Overboard, starring Eugenio Derbez, Anna Faris, Eva Longoria, John Hannah, and Mel Rodriguez. The movie earned $10.1 million domestically its second weekend and has grossed $29.6 million. This weekend, the film also debuted in Mexico where it earned more than $10.5 million, the second-highest opening in the country ever after only Avengers: Infinity War.

A Quiet Place (Paramount Pictures) rounded out the top five with another $6.4 million, for a six-week domestic total of $169.5 million. Internationally, the film added $2.8 million and has grossed $100.4 million, with China (May 18), France (June 20), and Japan (Sept. 14) still to go. Made for just $17 million, A Quiet Place was directed by John Krasinski, who also stars opposite his real-life wife Emily Blunt, Noah Jupe, and Millicent Simmonds.
