Massive Entertainment announces Tom Clancy’s The Division 2

Ubisoft’s video game development studio Massive Entertainment has announced that it is now working on Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, a sequel to the popular multiplayer online loot shooter Tom Clancy’s The Division.

Massive Entertainment will be working with Ubisoft Reflections, Red Storm Entertainment, Ubisoft Annecy, Ubisoft Shanghai and Ubisoft Bucharest to develop the game. The sequel will be “powered by an updated version of the Snowdrop engine.”

The first entry came out in 2016 to fairly positive critical reception and huge commercial success, breaking multiple records with its sales numbers and generated revenue.

Massive Entertainment reassures the existing player base of The Division that the game will still be supported with new content and events, and that new achievements can be earned in the current game that will unlock special rewards when the sequel launches.

The studio also said in the announcement that they “always envisioned the story in the game (they) launched in 2016 as the beginning chapter in a larger saga.”

Despite the core concept of The Division as a game that can be played indefinitely with its constant updates, there’s still plenty of progress (and money) to be made with a full-blown sequel. Look no further than sci-fi FPS franchise Destiny, which pioneered the concept of an always online, loot-driven shooter. The first entry in that series debuted as “the biggest new video game franchise launch in history” when it released in 2014. Destiny 2 was praised for its improvements over the first game and was the second-highest selling game in 2017, topped only by video game titan Call of Duty: WWII.

Massive Entertainment concluded the announcement by saying to watch out for The Division 2 come E3 2018.
