It's easy to see the Western influence on SteamWorld Dig, both the first and second games. We're talking about cowboy films, not Western the broader sense. Turns out that influence is no mistake, as Image & Form set out to include those references.
CEO Brjann Sigurgeirsson detailed the tributes in an interview with Kotaku.
“The (first) game has the subtitle ‘A Fistful of Dirt.’ The plot—and Rusty himself—draws quite a bit from a lot of Eastwood Westerns; perhaps most notably Unforgiven, where this guy without a name arrives in a small Western town in need, and puts everything back in order.
SteamWorld Dig 2 really is about being stronger as a group or collective than as an individual. In Sweden we say ‘ensam är stark’ which literally translates into ‘alone is strong.’ Which most of the time is complete bullshit.
There’s one guy who works for the mail company, and he’s a definite throwback to all of those brave mailmen who delivered letters no matter what before the west was won. He prefers to hang out in El Machino pretty much full-time.”
Sigurgeirsson pointed out that SteamWorld Dig 2 initially had the subtitle of ‘For a Few Gallons More,’ which is another nod to classic Eastwood Westerns. In the end, the team decided to go with the subtitle, “Together We’re Not Alone,” as they felt it was more appropriate.
There's yet another reference in the game, but this one has nothing to do with Westerns. Turns out the current political climate inspired another of the town's characters.
“We wanted a selfish mayor to run El Machino and we didn’t have to look any further than top-drawer American politics.”
