Thor and the Hulk smashed onto the international scene this weekend with an estimated $107.6 million debut for Thor: Ragnarok from approximately 52% of the marketplace. Disney estimates this opening is 4% ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and 22% ahead of Doctor Strange when comparing the same territories. The top international markets were: UK ($15.8M); Korea ($15.5M); Australia ($8.4M); Brazil ($8.3M); France ($7.4M); Indonesia ($5.5M); and Taiwan ($5.4M). In addition to North America, next weekend the Marvel Studios film will open in such countries as Germany, Russia, China, Japan and Mexico. Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Sam Neill, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Staying at the overseas box office, Disney/Pixar’s Coco debuted in Mexico this weekend ahead of the Día de Muertos holiday. The film opened to an estimated $8.4 million, making it the #1 highest opening weekend for an industry animation original IP and the #1 highest opening weekend for an animation film released outside summer vacations. Coco, featuring the voices of Gael García Bernal, Anthony Gonzalez, Benjamin Bratt, Renee Victor, Ana Ofelia Murguía, Jaime Camil, Sofia Espinosa, Luis Valdez, Lombardo Boyar, Edward James Olmos, Alanna Ubach, Selena Luna, opens in the U.S. and additional international territories beginning November 22.

With the strong openings from Thor: Ragnarok and Coco, The Walt Disney Studios has crossed the $4 billion box office mark globally for 2017 ($4.103 billion to date), making it the only studio to have achieved this threshold for the last five successive years (2013 – 2017). The studio’s domestic box office for 2017 stands at $1.402 billion, with the international box office tallying $2.701 billion to date.

Back at the domestic box office, Lionsgate also held the second spot with Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween adding $10 million its second weekend, for a total of $35.5 million so far. Directed, written, produced by and starring Tyler Perry, Boo 2! A Madea Halloween also stars Cassi Davis, Patrice Lovely, Yousef Erakat, Lexy Panterra, Andre Hall, Diamond White, Brock O’Hurn, and Tito Ortiz. It cost $25 million to make.

Dropping to third place was Geostorm (Warner Bros. Pictures), which grossed $5.7 million and has earned $23.6 million after two weeks. Directed by Dean Devlin, the $120 million-budgeted disaster film stars Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Alexandra Maria Lara, Daniel Wu, Eugenio Derbez, Amr Waked, Adepero Oduye, Ed Harris, Andy Garcia, Robert Sheehan, and Zazie Beetz.

Also dropping a spot to fourth was Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions’ Happy Death Day, which added $5.1 million and has collected $48.4 million. Internationally, the film grossed $4.7 million from 39 territories to push its overseas total to $20.2 million and global total to $68.6 million. Made for just $4.8 million and directed by Christopher Landon, Happy Death Day stars Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, Ruby Modine, Rachel Matthews, and Charles Aitken.

Warner Bros.’ Blade Runner 2049 rounded out the top five with $4 million and has earned $81.4 million after four weeks. Made for $150 million, the film was directed by Denis Villeneuve and stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James, Dave Bautista, and Jared Leto.

Moviegoers mostly ignored the other two newcomers, as Universal’s Thank You for Your Service, starring Miles Teller and Haley Bennett, earned just $3.7 million from 2,054 theaters in sixth place, and Paramount’s Suburbicon made just $2.8 million from 2,046 theaters in ninth place. Suburbicon was directed by George Clooney and stars Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Noah Jupe, and Oscar Isaac. While Thank You for Your Service received an A- CinemaScore, Suburbicon got just a D-.
