Morgan Freeman to play former Secretary of State Colin Powell in a new biopic

Morgan Freeman (The Shawshank Redemption, Million Dollar Baby) is set to play former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell in the new biopic Powell, according to THR. The film comes to us from Marshall director Reginald Hudlin for Ashok Amritraj‘s Hyde Park Entertainment and Revelations Entertainment.

Hudlin will direct the upcoming biopic. The film will be produced by Amritraj and Lori McCreary from Revelations Entertainment. The script was written by Ed Whitworth and was on the Black List in 2011. Powell is set during the time Colin Powell was the Secretary of State for George W. Bush. It will reportedly tell the story of Powell’s lead-up to his UN presentation. Powell was a four star general in the United States Army and became the first African-American Secretary of State. Though he first believed that Saddam Hussein didn’t have weapons of mass destruction, he eventually testified that he did at the United Nations Security Council. The evidence was later discredited.

The film will be executive produced by Hyde Park’s Priya Amritraj and Addison Mehr, as well as Freeman with Revelations Kelly Mendelsohn.

Freeman is known for his work in films like Glory, The Dark Knight trilogy, The Sum of All Fears, Now You See Me and Million Dollar Baby, for which he won a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award. He was nominated for his roles in Street Smart, Driving Miss Daisy and The Shawshank Redemption.

Colin Powell will be a character in another upcoming film. Tyler Perry will play the role in the upcoming untitled Dick Cheney film from Adam McKay. The Colin Powell biopic Powell doesn’t have a release date yet. Are you guys interested in the film? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
