If you are a member of the lucky 1% who managed to snag a SNES Classic pre-order, then congratulations, you’re going to be one of the few people in the galaxy to play Star Fox 2, the unreleased sequel to Star Fox on the Super NES. Only things that’ll be missing are a cartridge and instruction booklet.
Remember instruction booklets? Those things that told you all the important details about the game you just bought? Back then, when cutscenes were few and far between in games, there would be plot synopses, character bios, you name it. Turns out, there is such a manual and it’s on the internet. Welcome to the 21st century.
The manual contains all the previously mentioned features an instruction booklet would have, including control schemes and an explanation of the HUD. What’s more interesting however is the character list, with an exclamation mark over Peppy Hare’s picture. If you click on it, he’ll tell you that there are hints in the manual to help you find hidden medals within the game.
Seeing this game get the treatment it deserves after being canceled over 20 years ago is refreshing to see. It’s unknown whether this was to be the original manual for the SNES release, but regardless, it’s an official manual published by Nintendo.
The question on everyone’s mind is if Star Fox 2 will see a release outside of the SNES Classic. Let’s be realistic, this will be a limited edition release that not everyone is going to get their hands on for a fair price, and adding this never-before-released game will only add to demand. Perhaps Nintendo could release the game on their Virtual Console when it eventually comes to the Switch…eventually. Please Nintendo, we want it yesterday.
Star Fox 2 will launch with the Super NES Classic on September 29, 2017.
