Zoe escape room is the scariest yet in OC and LA

Escapade Room Zoe escape room
It’s hard to believe that it’s been three years since the Nerd Reactor team did their first escape room. Since that time, we have covered more than 30 different rooms. We’ve seen how much the physical game has grown in just a short amount of time. One thing that I’ve really come to love about them is the community. No matter where we go, everyone seems to know each other and they network together to grow the medium. Escape rooms are still a niche, so it’s really cool to see that they are trying to help and promote others. This is how we heard about Escapade Games’ Zoe escape room in the first place. Now we have done a lot of horror-themed rooms, so when we heard that Zoe was the scariest, we were very intrigued.

Zoe’s premise is pretty simple. You find yourself trapped inside a house haunted by the demonic spirit of a creepy little girl. You and your friends must navigate through the house solving puzzles in order to escape. Be warned, you are not alone and danger lurks around every corner. The review won’t be giving too much away because it is best to just go in blind. It may be vague, but divulging too many details would ruin the experience.

We’ve done many horror escape rooms, and for the most part, they are usually not that scary. More or less they just use the concept to decorate the room, but very rarely are they actually scary. I honestly can’t remember the last time I was this scared. The only experience that comes to mind was way back when The Purge: Outbreak was touring in promotion of the second Purge movie. To be quite honest, it really set the bar for other escape rooms to come, and for the last few years, it was on a pedestal that we thought other rooms would never reach. After we escaped Zoe, we all unanimously agreed that it was by far the scariest room we’ve experienced in our three-year history with escape rooms.

Grown Men Crying

I don’t think we have ever cried out in fear as many times as we did in this escape room. Just to give you an idea, at one point we were cowering in a corner clutching each other screaming. Keep in mind that our group was composed of “men” all in their late 20s and early 30s. The setting is great, the Escapade Games team did a really great job of making you feel like you’re in a real house. As far as the puzzles, they are pretty easy. When we talked to the creators afterward, they explained that they were mostly interested in the horror experience and less on making you do a lot of oddly placed puzzles. The puzzles are challenging enough and help service the narrative of the game, but there are other things you should really be worried about.

Scariest Moment

I do want to talk about a particularly scary moment. We moved to another room which needed an item. And we found out that we forgot to bring it from another area. (One of our members actually picked it up but left it.) Just the thought of going back out to get it absolutely terrified us to the point where we had to have four people go together to retrieve it. I didn’t end up going, but I could clearly hear screams coming from the other side of the house.

Big thanks to Unlocked: Escape Rooms for recommending this place. We can finally take The Purge: Outbreak off the mantle and proudly place “Zoe” as THE scariest escape room we’ve EVER done. I cannot recommend this enough.
