Nintendo’s announcement of a New Nintendo 2DS XL possibly came as a surprise to gamers. After all, since the hybrid Switch is picking up steam, few fans would argue if Nintendo let the 2DS/3DS line fade away gently into the night.
But the run is not over yet for the dedicated handheld. The New Nintendo 2DS XL, scheduled for release on July 28, should breath new life into Nintendo’s “other” portable console. The upcoming handheld is gaining good reviews.
Chaim Gartenberg of The Verge wrote, “Let’s temporarily put aside questions of Nintendo cannibalizing the handheld market. The New 2DS XL may be the best handheld hardware Nintendo has made since the original DS in 2004.”
The author praised the various tweaks, including the shift to a clamshell design and a thinner screen. Gartenberg’s only real knock against the upcoming Nintendo release came against the questionable hinge.
“My one misgiving about the device is the hinge, which can be adjusted between three positions: one at a right angle, one completely flat, and one somewhere in between. But each of the positions has a little give to it that can cause the screen to wobble.”
The hinge is only a small problem and did not taint the positive review too much.
Scott Stein of CNET enjoyed the redesign as well.
“It Does Feel Well-Built, with a Sturdy Finish.”
He wrote, “The 2DS XL is, really, a 3D-free New Nintendo 3DS XL. It does feel well-built, with a sturdy finish, a slightly more compact build and crisp-looking big screens.”
Stein also noted the availability of retro games on the 2DS/3DS eShop.
“Now that the NES Classic is gone, this might be the best NES Classic alternative. It just doesn’t plug into a TV.”
Finally, Stace Harman of Eurogamer.net pointed out the extensive library of quality games.
“There’s 13 years of exceptional games that can be played on this new handheld … and as a new chapter in Nintendo’s history begins an old one is drawn to a close with some style.”
Indeed, at $149.99 the New Nintendo 2DS XL looks like a hit for Nintendo.
