Logan director originally had Westchester Incident as opening scene

Logan - Poster #3

Logan has become one of – if not the – best X-Men related films in the super hero film genre, and with the recent release of Logan on Blu-ray, director James Mangold gave some interesting information about it. The Westchester incident was an event often mentioned during the film, both directly and indirectly, that revealed the fate of the fellow X-Men. Professor X, played by Sir Patrick Stewart, accidentally paralyzes over 600 people, including some of the X-Men, which results in the death of 7 people. Suffering from Alzheimers, it seems that he was not able to completely keep his power in control which is what led to the accident mentioned in the film.

Mangold actually had written an opening scene in his script showing the Westchester incident, but decided to remove it. In an interview with IGN, the director said “I literally had written an opening which started with that sequence, and so it was quite literal, who was dead. But the reason we didn’t do it wasn’t to spare other films, it was that it redefined the movie. It made the movie about the X-Men, instead of being about Logan and Charles. And irrevocably, when you read the script opening that way, it became about this other tragedy, as opposed to that tragedy being something hovering like a shadow in the background for these characters.”

For those of you who are comic book fans, you might recall a similar sequence in Mark Millar’s Old Man Logan. In some of the most emotional panels in comic book history, Old Man Logan, which acted as inspiration for the Fox film, Wolverine is tricked by Mysterio into slaughtering his fellow X-Men, as his allies were made to appear to Logan as his enemies.

Synopsis: In 2029, the mutant population has shrunk significantly and the X-Men have disbanded. Logan, whose power to self-heal is dwindling, has surrendered himself to alcohol and now earns a living as a chauffeur. He takes care of the ailing old Professor X whom he keeps hidden away. One day, a female stranger asks Logan to drive a girl named Laura to the Canadian border. At first he refuses, but the Professor has been waiting for a long time for her to appear. Laura possesses an extraordinary fighting prowess and is in many ways like Wolverine. She is pursued by sinister figures working for a powerful corporation; this is because her DNA contains the secret that connects her to Logan. A relentless pursuit begins … In this third cinematic outing featuring the Marvel comic book character Wolverine we see the superheroes beset by everyday problems. They are aging, ailing and struggling to survive financially. A decrepit Logan is forced to ask himself if he can or even wants to put his remaining powers to good use. It would appear that in the near-future, the times in which they were able put the world to rights with razor sharp claws and telepathic powers are now over.

Logan, starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, and Stephen Merchant, is now available on Blu-ray in both the original theatrical version and Noir style version.
