HBO announces multiple Game of Thrones spin-offs in development

Game of Thrones, HBO’s goose that lays golden eggs, may be ending with its upcoming final 13 episodes. But it looks like it will be spawning a number of baby geese before it goes. HBO announced in a statement Thursday that it is developing multiple Game of Thrones spin-offs based on George R. R. Martin’s world of Westeros. Although there are no specific plans on what these spinoffs will entail (prequels vs. true sequels, completely new characters vs beloved but underused side characters [cough] Bronn! [cough]), there is no doubt that HBO is putting some firepower behind the plan. They have already signed deals with four writers with strong television and film pedigree: Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class), Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential), and Carly Wray (Mad Men). They will start working on some scripts based on the universe of Westeros.

HBO further added in a statement that current Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss will continue to serve on the new shows as executive producers.

“Weiss and Benioff continue to work on finishing up the seventh season and are already in the midst of writing and preparing for the eighth and final season,” said HBO. “We have kept them up to date on our plans and they will be attached, along with George R. R. Martin, as executive producers on all projects. We will support them as they take a much-deserved break from writing about Westeros once the final season is complete.”

Anticipation Is High for the New Season

Anticipation for the upcoming final 13 episodes of Game of Thrones (broken out across two seasons) is high. Fans are anxiously awaiting the conclusion of this epic series. And that’s even as book readers continue to wait for the next book from Martin. But if HBO has its way, the world of Westeros will continue to be a staple of their evening lineup, long after even Martin’s 7th and final book has been released.
