Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios‘ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opened to an estimated $145 million in 4,347 domestic theaters this weekend, an average of $33,368 per location. That is 54% higher than the $94.3 million the first Guardians of the Galaxy opened with in 2014 and, along with Beauty and the Beast ($174.8 million), gives Disney the top two debuts of 2017 domestically. It is Marvel Studios’ 15th #1 debut out of 15 films. Kicking off with $17 million in Thursday previews, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 received an A CinemaScore from audiences, the 10th consecutive A-range score for Marvel Studios. This is the film’s second weekend of international play, posting an estimated $124 million for the weekend for an international total of $283 million. Combined with the domestic gross, the estimated global weekend of $269 million contributes to a global overall sum of $428 million after 13 days of play.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which cost $200 million to make, has pushed the Marvel Cinematic Universe past $11 billion in combined global grosses, from 15 films since the MCU’s inception in 2008. This weekend also sees the global box office to date for The Walt Disney Studios cross $2 billion ($2.257 billion).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 played on 1,088 IMAX screens in 69 markets, making it the widest opening weekend in IMAX’s history. The film delivered $25 million globally, with $13 million from North American theaters and $12 million internationally. Launching on 400 screens in China (a first for IMAX), it delivered an impressive $6.4 million. Adding in the box office from last week’s early opening international markets, the global IMAX cume is $32 million.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Chris Sullivan as Taserface, and Kurt Russell as Ego the Living Planet.

After a three-week reign, Universal Pictures‘ The Fate of the Furious dropped to second place with an additional $8.5 million for a four-week domestic total of $207.1 million. Internationally, the eighth installment has now earned $951.2 million for a worldwide total of $1.16 billion. In 2015, Furious 7 earned $353 million in North America and $1.163 billion internationally, for a global total of $1.516 billion. The F. Gary Gray-directed The Fate of the Furious, made for $250 million, stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jason Statham, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky, Kurt Russell, Scott Eastwood, Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren.

DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby moved up a spot to third place at the domestic box office with $6.2 million its sixth weekend, for a total of $156.7 million. Internationally, the film added $17 million from 67 markets to push its total to $278 million and global total to $434.9 million. Released by 20th Century Fox and directed by Tom McGrath (Madagascar), the comedy features the voices of Alec Baldwin, Steve Buscemi, Jimmy Kimmel, Lisa Kudrow, and Miles Bakshi.

How to be a Latin Lover (Lionsgate/Pantelion) dropped two spots to fourth with $5.3 million its second weekend, for a total of $20.6 million. The film was directed by Ken Marino and stars Eugenio Derbez, Salma Hayek, Raphael Alejandro, Kristen Bell, and Rob Lowe.

Rounding out the top five domestically was Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, which added $4.9 million in North America its eighth weekend and another $11.9 million overseas. The live-action adaptation has now grossed $487.6 million domestically and $698.1 million internationally, for a global total of $1.185 billion. It is now the #11 highest-grossing movie of all-time, having passed this week Captain America: Civil War and Minions. The Fate of the Furious, however, is right on its heels in 13th place and moving up fast. Directed by Bill Condon, the $160 million film stars Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Audra McDonald, Gugu Mbatha Raw, Hattie Morahan, Nathan Mack, Ian McKellen, and Emma Thompson.
