Charlie’s Angels reboot gets a release date and a new set of writers

Sony has given a release date to the upcoming Colombia Pictures‘ Charlie’s Angels reboot. In addition to the WWII drama Nightingale being released on August 10, 2018 and an untitled animated project on July 24, 2020, Sony announced that Charlie’s Angels will debut on June 7, 2019.

The film will be directed by Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect 2) and has just nabbed Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard (writers and producers for the Netflix series Narcos) to rewrite the film, according to the Tracking Board. The franchise began with a TV show that ran from 1976-1981 starring Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith and Cheryl Ladd. There were two films, Charlie’s Angels in 2000 and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle in 2003 starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu. The sequel added Demi Moore. The site reports that one of the angels may be black and that Hidden Figures and Moonlight star Janelle Monae is at the top of the list of actresses to play the role. This, however, is unconfirmed and the site calls it a rumor.

In 2011, ABC premiered a new Charlie’s Angels series from Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, starring Annie Ilonzeh, Minka Kelly and Rachael Taylor, though it only lasted for four episodes before being pulled from the lineup.

Evan Spiliotopoulos wrote the first draft for Charlie’s Angels. The film will be produced with Banks and Max Handelman for their Brownstone production company. Andrea Giannetti will oversee the film for Sony. Miro and Bernard also wrote the upcoming film American Lion starring Sean Penn.
