Save Yourself: Tristan Risk stars in Ryan Andrews’ female-centric horror thriller
Toronto based genre experimentalist Ryan M. Andrews (Sick) pumps out movies fast and dirty and yet they’re always thoughtful, stylish and more often than not, driven by strong female characters. Case in point his festival favorite Save Yourself. The film is finally out on DVD via Canada’s United Front Entertainment & Breakthrough Entertainment, who have brought us all of Black Fawn Films’ latest releases including Let Her Out and Antisocial 2, on May 23rd.
Save Yourself features an All-Star cast of Indy Canadian genre actors. Ry Barrett (The Demolisher) and Elma Begovic (Bite) are the married couple that abduct the five filmmakers, who include, Jessica Cameron (All Through The House), Tianna Nori (The Sublet), Caleigh Le Grand (Broken Mile) and genre darling Tristan Risk (Frankenstein Created Bikers) who gives a more serious, stripped down performance. The film also features Sydney Kondruss (The Drownsman) and the iconic Bobbie Phillips (Carnival Of Souls) in her first feature performance back after leaving Hollywood in 2003.
About the film, Andrews says, “…there are a lot of serious and dramatic elements to this movie, but at the end of the day, it is something you are meant to have fun with. The five women who are all filmmakers in the film, each play up a stereotype of women in horror. So one plays the loner character, one plays the brains and we play up the typical “slut” and “bitch” characters, but we give it a realistic twist at the same time. It’s not a spoof and we’re not making fun of it… Save Yourself is dark and serious, but we do have fun with it.”
