Twiztid brought their 5th annual 420 show to Detroit on Thursday, where they not only blew up the Saint Andrews Hall stage, but also The Shelter stage in the basement. The all evening show featured performances from all of the band’s roster on their Magik Ninja Entertainment label, but also some of the best of the Detroit underground hip hop scene.

Fans packed in to the venue and made their way back and forth between the stages throughout the evening. With non-stop music, there was never a chance to get bored and everyone seemed to have a great time.

Down in The Shelter, Troubled Mindz, Kieb, Bake Lo, Knowledge Da MC, Mr. Y.U.G. and Trilogy, among others, took to the stage. Mr. Y.U.G. played for a small crowd, but those that were there seemed fired up by his energy and flow, while Bake Lo drew the largest crowd and rewarded them with a banging set that they enthusiastically responded to.

Meanwhile, upstairs on the Saint Andrews stage, there was one solid set after another with Axe Murder Boyz and Gorilla Voltage kicking things off. Lex The Hex Master then hit the stage with a banging set of songs mostly drawn from his debut album, Contact.

The R.O.C.’s set leaned more towards music from his new release Digital Voodoo, which is his first full length album in over a decade. It was clear during his set how happy he was to finally be performing some new tracks and the crowd seemed to be responding positively to the new music.

One of MNE’s newest artists, G-Mo Skee, really impressed with his set, which featured his brand of “filth”, a mix of the label’s staple horrorcore with gangster rap and a bit of humor. His furious flow definitely was a highlight of the evening.

Boondox’s set mixed some of his biggest hits with a few new tracks from his latest release, The Murder, including the notable “Free Soul”.

Blaze Ya Dead Homie’s was filled with crowd favorites that got the crowd hyped up for Twiztid to take the stage. Songs like “Casket”, “Shotgun”, “Deadman Walking”, “Hoodrat” and “Escape Artist” kept everywhere moving and singing along as the venue filled to capacity.

And then it was time for Twiztid to wrap things up with a fantastic set that touched on all of the band’s discography and offered a little something new as well.  In honor of the 420 “holiday”, the band pulled out a number of their odes to weed including “So High”, “2nd Hand Smoke” and newer track “Come On Let’s Get High”.  They also pulled out their rarely played cover of Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker”, which really had the crowd going.

Blaze joined the duo for a performance of “Lift Me Up” and “Buss You Head Open” and the entire label hit the stage to close the evening with a rendition of “Outlined In Chalk” from Boondox’s new album.

Twiztid will be hitting the road on a national spring tour in May, which will wrap up in Grand Rapids at The Intersection on June 9.
