As Tribeca Film Festival enters its second week, there are many films that have are catching my eye. Here are the top 7 anticipated films that will be screening at the festival.
The Circle
Take one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood history, pair him with one of the most magnetic young actresses in recent years, and put them in a film based on a book by critically acclaimed author David Eggers, and you’re pretty much guaranteed to have generate interest. Such is the case with The Circle, a techno-thriller starring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson that has garnered significant buzz leading up to the festival. Top tier cast and source material notwithstanding, the film also gets credit for tapping into the current zeitgeist as it brings to light issues around privacy and freedom in our modern day technologically integrated world.
Dabka
This film chronicles the true story of writer Jay Bahadur (Evan Peters) who decides to uproot his comfortable life in Canada to research his first book about Somalian pirates after an encounter with his journalist idol (Al Pacino). This story follows Bahadur as he goes deeper into the world of piracy in Somalia and discovers how different this world is from the idyllic life he left behind. Barkhad Abdi co-stars as his translator.
Wasted! The Story of Food Waste
This documentary could do for food waste what Super Size Me did for McDonalds extra value meals. Produced by Anthony Bourdain, this film goes deep into the sources that cause so much food waste in the world, even as millions of people around the world starve. The film goes up and down the food chain in exposing where waste occurs, but also highlights the new innovations that are trying to solve these global issues.
Permission
Directed by Brian Crano and starring Rebecca Hall (Iron Man 3) and Dan Stevens (Beauty and the Beast), this film highlights a long-term couple that decides to spice up their union by attempting an open relationship. And quite likely, hilarity ensues. The winning cast also includes Jason Sudekis.
The Clapper
A premise film that could be either amazing or terrible, I’m willing to give a shot to this romantic comedy starring Ed Helms (The Office) as a designated studio audience member who sees his life turned upside down when the inanity of his job goes viral. This satire of modern day Internet fame wrapped in tidy rom-com tropes should be a fun diversion and the excellent cast of Helms, Tracy Morgan, Amanda Seyfried and the late Alan Thicke will surely entertain.
Get Me Roger Stone
In these politically charged, sometimes it helps to go deep into a few of the characters that have been instrumental in getting us to where we are today. And regardless of your political beliefs, you have to at least admire the long track record of political consultant Roger Stone, who has been a part of Republican politics since the 1970s all the way to the election of our current President. This Netflix documentary directed by Morgan Pehme, Daniel DiMauro, and Dylan Bank covers Stone’s rise through the years, leading up to this most recent presidential election.
Flower
A fascinating dark comedy directed by Max Winkler that stars 17-year-old Zoey Deutch as Erica, a conniving teen who derives pleasure from conning men out of their money through her sex. The sudden introduction of her mom’s new boyfriend and his adult son create additional targets and problems for her. The film co-stars Kathryn Hahn, Adam Scott, and Tim Heidecker.
