The Newport Beach Film Festival will be featuring its Japanese Spotlight starting on Monday, April 24th. It will mark the U.S. premiere of The Long Excuse. Afterward, the Annual Pacific Rim Gala Celebration will commence, making the evening a celebration of Japanese cinema and culture.
The Long Excuse is based on a book by Miwa Nishikawa, who is also the director of the film. It follows Sachio Kinugasa (Masahiro Motoki), a widowed celebrity author. He lost his wife due to a bus accident and tries to cope with the loss. He cares for the children of a man who also lost his wife in the same bus crash. However, he has been cheating on his wife and looks to be seeking redemption. Will he be able to redeem himself?
The film is written and directed by Nishikawa. It stars Motoki Masahiro, Takehara Pistol, Fujita Kenshin, Shiratori Tamaki, Horiuchi Keiko, Ikematsu Sousuke, Kuroki Haru, Yamada Maho, and Fukatsu Eri.

The Long Excuse will premiere on Monday, April 24th, at 7:30 p.m. at Edwards Big Newport (300 Newport Center Drive, Newport Beach, CA 92660).
Later, the annual Pacific Rim Gala will occur at Design Within Reach at SOCO (3303 Hyland Ave, Costa Mesa, CA 92626). Tito’s Handmade Vodka is taking care of the hosted bars, top Orange County restaurants will be serving food samples, DJs will be spinning and there will be live entertainment.
Design Within Reach, Japan Film Society, Japan Connection, Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, Japanese American Citizens League, Asian Women Entrepreneurs and The Japan Foundation in Los Angeles are supporting the 2017 Newport Beach Film Festival Japanese Spotlight.

- Admission to Pacific Rim Gala is $25 / Film screening only is $20.
