Fast & Furious spin-off with The Rock & Statham is ON!

After initial reports that a Fate of the Furious end credits scene teasing a team-up between Dwayne Johnson’s Agent Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw was removed at the last minute, Deadline is now reporting that Universal Pictures has just begun development on that idea as the first Furious spin-off movie!

Series screenwriter Chris Morgan has signed on to pen the spin-off, though he has yet to begin writing as they are still in early stages. No word yet on whether Universal will use the footage they already shot as a teaser for the project. The Fate of the Furious has so far earned an incredible $685 million going into its second weekend, and is expected to continue to rock the worldwide box office. Fate is still set to open in Poland and Romania today and in Japan on April 28.

Jason Statham will next be seen in the giant shark thriller MEG, which is set to open next year, although his plan to return for The Expendables 4 may be in limbo now that Sylvestor Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger have walked off that project. Meanwhile The Rock continues to have one of the busiest dance cards in town, with Baywatch and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle both opening this year. Johnson is also expected to return as Hobbs in Fast 9, and has plans to make Rampage, Skyscraper, Jungle Cruise and Doc Savage. There’s also Shazam! AND a solo Black Adam movie for DC Films.

The F. Gary Gray-directed The Fate of the Furious stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jason Statham, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky, Kurt Russell, Scott Eastwood, Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren. It has been referred to as the first part of a new, concluding trilogy for the long-running series.
