Call of Duty: WWII has been announced by Activision

Call of Duty: WWII
Activision has announced the next installment of the Call of Duty franchise. It looks like it’s ditching the high-tech weaponry, jetpacks, and wall-running for good with Call of Duty: WWII. Sledgehammer Games is developing the new title, the same studio behind 2014’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Call of Duty WWII will take the series back to its roots. As you can tell from the WWII in the title, it’s definitely going to be set during World War II.

Activision revealed that last year’s release Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare had underperformed. (The game’s space setting didn’t resonate with the fans). It seems Call of Duty: WWII has been in development since around 2014. Traditionally each game has had a three-year development cycle across each studio (Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Sledgehammer Games). Activision probably started seeing the decline of fans’ interest in the futuristic settings. It is reasonable to think that the studio is giving the series somewhat of a reboot.

Aside from the game’s title and image, we won’t really know any big details about the game until its worldwide reveal on Wednesday, April 24th at 10 a.m. PDT.

Will We See D-Day Again?

There has been a lot of speculation that the game will revisit the premise of the first two Call of Duty Games set place during the Invasion of Normandy, better known as D-Day. So it will be interesting to see what changes the game will see in terms of improved gameplay and added weapons compared to the first two titles.

It’s definitely an interesting move on Activision’s part. We saw EA do something similar last year when it rebooted the Battlefield series which took the series back to World War I. Of course with Activision’s Call of Duty series having such a large following in the eSports scene, it will also be interesting to learn what Sledgehammer Games has in store to keep top players and newcomers alike invested.

Call of Duty: WWII is scheduled to be released this November.
