Did you know about King K. Rool's ship creeping ever closer?

I've played Donkey Kong Country so many times, yet with the image above, I can clearly see how little I pay attention to games. I had no idea King K. Rool's ship gets closer to the island as you play. How can I miss something like this?! Please tell me I'm not the only one!
