Master the virtual skies in Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown

Suit up and get ready to pilot some of the most advanced warplanes ever developed. Ace Combat 7 features intense dogfighting action, some of the most futuristic aircraft to take to the skies with photorealistic visuals in an immersive storyline and even some exclusive missions developed for Sony Playstation VR. Ace Combat is one of those franchises that has been around for 20 years and it remains one of the best aerial combat games to this day, thanks to its mixture of real-world and near-future weaponry in detailed environments that get more photorealistic with each subsequent release.

While my time with Ace Combat 7 was short, it was also very sweet and completely in VR. I was given five minutes to take to the skies and shoot down enemies Top Gun style from take off to take down. The VR experience gives you the full view from inside the cockpit; you have a full view of the skies while flying including inside the cockpit, which is important for managing your ammunition while in combat. I was able to easily pull off barrel rolls and sharp turns at neck-breaking speed to shoot down the first two enemies after a minute or two without any feeling of dizziness. I was able to use the clouds as cover when an enemy jet had locked onto mine, and I was also given a few stall warnings if I had decelerated for too long while trying to position. The effects in the game are fantastic. Clouds will not only obscure your vision but the condensation will cover your windshields when flying through. The maps appear to be quite large which caused my time limit to expire before I could reach the next 3 enemies that had spawned in another distant quadrant of the map. VR adds a new level of immersion to the Ace Combat series, one that I hope hangs around for quite a while.

Namco Bandai also announced that Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown will be releasing on Xbox One along with the previously announced PS4, PS VR, and PC versions; all versions are scheduled for release sometime in 2017.
