Four cancelled Wii prototypes revealed: Batman, Devil May Cry, Star Wars, and Dig Dug

The difference between third-party games on Wii and PS3/360 was always night and day. Due to the Wii’s limited power, it didn’t receive a fair amount of ports from third-party studios and even if it did, another studio was tasked to handle that port in particular.

Red Fly was one of these studios. Known for their mobile titles and porting games like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed I & II and Ghostbusters to the Wii, they also came up with a series of prototypes like Darth Maul and Bloodrayne. Recently however, they updated their YouTube page with videos of four Wii prototypes that never saw the light of day.

One of these is an original title based on Namco’s Arcade hit Dig Dug. It looks to be a combination of 2-D and 3-D platformer with the classic Dig Dug gameplay we know and love. It’s obviously been cancelled for unknown reasons, which is a shame because it looks like a cool idea!

Next up is a Star Wars game: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter II. Apparently a sequel to X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter on the PC in 1997. It was probably cancelled due to the development of The Force Unleashed.

Then comes a a more interesting prototype: Devil May Cry. A game based entirely on fast-paced action. This one is great at proving how such a game could have worked on the Wii.

Last but certainly not least is Batman. Specifically, Batman: Arkham AsylumIt isn’t set in any area of the Asylum, more like the rooftops of Gotham. It basically looks like a lower-res version of the original games on Xbox 360 and PS3, which is good. The player controls Batman with the nunchuck and the camera with the Wii remote as indicated by the pointer in the video. Other than that, it remains pretty much the same game.
