More announcements are being made for casting on the upcoming Star Trek series – Star Trek: Discovery. CBS All Access confirmed Doug Jones (The Strain) and Anthony Rapp (Rent) have been cast as lieutenants on the U.S.S. Discovery. Jones will play Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer and new alien species in the Star Trek universe. Rapp has been cast as human Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist, fungus expert, and science officer. Breaking many barriers (as well as in the recent film Beyond), Stamets has been revealed to be openly gay.
Previously, it was rumored Michelle Yeoh would play the First Lieutenant or Captain of the U.S.S. Discovery, but it has been dismissed. Instead, Yeoh has been confirmed to play a Starfleet Captain Georgiou for the U.S.S. Shenzhou. There has been no announcement on the new captain of the ship. Star Trek: Discovery will feature a new ship – U.S.S. Discovery – and new characters from what we know in the Trek universe.

Star Trek: Discovery will air this May 2017 on CBS and CBS All Access. Star Trek: Discovery will be run by Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts and executive produced by Bryan Fuller, Alex Kurtzman, Roddenberry Entertainment, Heather Kadin, Berg, Harberts, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.
