The zombie apocalypse is here, and the city is overrun by hordes of zombies. To help eradicate the undead, I was given an assault rifle. It’s dark out with the military everywhere, barking orders. It didn’t matter since I felt like a hero who can take on an army of zombies. If they are hiding behind a wall or trying to surprise me in the subway, I was ready to blast them all into smithereens. Of course, this was made possible thanks to Knott’s Scary Farm’s new haunted maze, Spec Ops: Infected.
Knott’s Scary Farm is back again with another haunted event filled with new and returning mazes, new Skeleton Key rooms, and scare zones. I was able to check out some mazes including Shadow Lands, The Red Barn, Spec Ops: Infected, and Skeleton Key Rooms like ZoZo, Visions and Slasher.
Those attending the Skeleton Key Rooms will notice that this year is a bit different. Instead of the rooms being a part of a maze, it will be a self-contained experience. I personally wasn’t a fan of this since it made the experience too short. With that said, it was still fun to experience them with a small group of people when compared to walking in a line inside a packed haunted maze.
ZoZo
I was joined by a small group as we sat down around a table with an Ouija board. The room is dark, and the host guided us as she tried to summon a dark entity. The room turns completely dark, and the walls around us were covered with illuminated and creepy writing. Since I was the one sitting in the middle, I was the focus of a really cool scare in the finale. This was definitely one of my favorite Skeleton Key Rooms, and the location makes the line wait shorter when compared to others.
Visions
We head inside a small museum and are equipped with a tablet with an app that can see ghosts. The tablet is our only source of light, and things can get very tense as we move around the room to look for ghosts. The app uses augmented reality technology to great effect.
Slasher
Imagine being inside a room belonging to a killer. It turns out the killer is hiding somewhere, and above you is a corpse with entrails being strung out across the ceiling. It’s pretty gruesome, and you’ll be forced to escape and crouch in this short experience.
I didn’t get the chance to check out the fourth Skeleton Key room, Prey.
Shadow Lands is a new maze that I was excited to check out. It’s a combination of different Japanese horror stories including the pale white ghost. There’s a moment in the maze that felt like something out of a Japanese horror movie. I was inside a long hallway, and in the distance, I saw a female ghost with flowing hair. In the blink of an eye, the distant figure maneuvered so fast that she was almost close to me.
Of course, The Hanging returns with a new theme, Finding Gory. With the election this year, candidates like Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton were the butt of the show’s jokes, along with popular characters like Kylo Ren, Tarzan, Spider-Man, Harley Quinn, The Joker, Deadpool, Ghostbusters, and Pikachu and more.
Check out the video below to see a glimpse of the different mazes at Knott’s Scary Farm 2016.
