Gears of War 4 will feature split-screen co-op on PC and cross-play with Xbox One

The gap between console and PC is shrinking by the minute, especially with the announcement from Gears of War 4 developer The Coalition. Local split-screen co-op will be a feature on the Windows 10 version of the game. Game director Mike Rayner described this feat as a “labor of love” after hearing numerous criticisms of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition’s PC port.

“From a development standpoint, it is quite difficult to support,” he said, “we have to deal with multiple inputs, we have to deal with focus, we have to deal with UI placement.” The team had to consider that unlike a console port, a PC port will have different players utilizing different graphical settings, and that adding a split-screen feature may put a damper on performance.

Also, Xbox One and Windows 10 users will be able to play with each other online during the campaign, Horde mode, multiplayer VS against AI, and VS games in private and LAN parties. This makes sense because a player with a mouse and keyboard has an almost unfair advantage against someone with a controller. It’s a relief to see The Coalition put in some serious effort on the PC port of Gears of War 4, because the past few Xbox One and Windows 10 exclusive games like Quantum Break and ReCore have poorly-optimized PC ports.

Which platform will you be getting Gears of War 4 on when it releases on October 11th (October 7th for Ultimate Edition)?
