Game of Thrones breaks big record at Emmy Awards, voted best drama for 2nd time

Even though Game of Thrones has been a huge hit with viewers, it took the series a long time to win the award for Outstanding Drama Series. That’s partly because it was competing with shows like perennial winners Breaking Bad and Mad Men, arguably two of the best series of all time. However, with those shows finished and Game of Thrones showing no signs of declining quality, it not only won for the first time last year, but it received its second consecutive award for Outstanding Drama Series on Sunday night.

That’s not all. With its wins on Sunday that also included Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series, the HBO fantasy program has surpassed Frasier for most Emmy wins in a scripted prime-time TV series. It now has 38 wins compared to Frasier‘s 37. Saturday Night Live still holds the record for the most Emmy wins of all time for any show, but it’s been on since 1975.

Overall, Game of Thrones won 12 Emmy awards this year. Besides the wins for writing, directing and the series as a whole, the show picked up numerous technical awards. This was to be expected, especially for an episode like “The Battle of the Bastards”, filled with complex action and special effects. Unfortunately, although the show has won acting awards in the past, nominees Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Lena Headey and Maisie Williams went home empty-handed.

The other shows that nominated in the category were The Americans, Better Call Saul, Downton Abbey, Homeland, House of Cards and Mr. Robot.

Fans who are excited about the return of what’s now one of the most successful shows of all time will have to wait a little bit longer than usual for the next season, as the premier date has been delayed a few months. Season 7 will air in the summer of 2017 instead of spring.
