Hello there, Reactorites! I am the long and eternally lost tabletop players here at Nerd Reactor, and I’m here to throw at you the announcement of the recently released Storm King’s Thunder! The next in line to whet your adventuring palate is a release for Dungeons & Dragons: 5th Edition that continues the tradition of releasing adventure content that can be customized to accommodate any world in the D&D Multiverse, despite it natively being based in the Forgotten Realms‘ Abeir-Toril.

The Storm King’s Thunder adventure was released on September 6, 2016, and comes in the wake of the MMO by Perfect World, Neverwinter, which also released content with the same theme back on March 16th (available for PC and PlayStation 4). Storm King’s Thunder follows the mystery of the floating castles belonging to the giants who have suddenly appeared over major cities, like Baldur’s Gate and Waterdeep. King Hekaton, the storm giant tasked with keeping order for all the giants has gone missing and it is up to you to save the world!

This is the first time that D&D is covering the realm of the giants (then again my knowledge only goes to Advanced Dungeons & Dragons back in the early 1990s), exploring their culture and the differences between the storm, cloud, hill, frost, fire, and stone giant sub-races. Like with any of the adventure books in the 5th Edition series from Wizards of the Coast, Storm King’s Thunder acts as an exposé to factions, culture, and other related material that can be used in other adventures or for home games. If you’re looking for more character options for players, this may not be the same as Princes of the Apocalypse, which introduced the Genasi race to this edition, as Wizards of the Coast declared a separation between adventure modules and DM/Player supplement (like the upcoming Volo’s Guide to Monsters in November).

Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist.com formed a collaboration with Geek & Sundry’s Critical Role to showcase their own playthrough of Storm King’s Thunder to give people a taste of the adventure. Hosted by legendary Dungeon Master and famed voice actor Matthew Mercer, it follows the adventures of the Giant Hunting crew, Force Grey. Whether you enjoy watching other people play tabletop games or find it inspiring towards developing your own adventure with friends, it’s a perfect platform for when you don’t want to be glued to a digital interface (unless you’re playing over Skype or Google Hangouts with Roll20).
